Let’s delve into the intriguing history of Morni Fort, perched atop the picturesque Morni hills in Haryana. Buckle up for a riveting tale that combines ancient legends, hidden chambers, and a transformation from a crumbling relic to a captivating museum.
The Morni Fort, with its golden bastions, stands defiantly at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters. Legend has it that Queen Morni herself oversaw its construction nearly two thousand years ago. Local folk songs sing praises of her nobility and justice, painting her as a remarkable ruler who left her mark on these hills.
Fast forward to the 17th century, and the fort was already a weathered sentinel atop the Morni hill. Its stonework whispered tales of battles, secrets, and the passage of time. But destiny had more in store for this ancient structure.
In 1814, during a tumultuous period, the King of Sirmur sought refuge within the fort’s sturdy walls. Overthrown from Nahan by the Gurkhas, he found solace here. The fort’s four towers witnessed his struggle, and its interiors were improved to provide respite from the scorching summers. The secret lies in its well-ventilated domes, which keep the fort cool even when the sun blazes outside.
In 2017, a remarkable transformation occurred. The fort, once crumbling and forgotten, emerged anew as the Morni Fort Museum. The Haryana Government invested over INR 1 crore to breathe life into its timeworn stones. The layout and design were meticulously crafted by Harvansh Dua, resulting in a captivating space that educates and enchants visitors.
The museum aims to captivate visitors of all ages, but its primary focus is on educating the youth about the hidden histories of this area. From flora and fauna to conservation efforts, the Morni Fort Museum weaves a compelling narrative.
Outside the Eastern Gate stands a Shiva temple, a silent witness to centuries of change. The fort itself remains visible from several kilometres away, its hilltop perch commanding attention.
So, dear reader, next time you wander through the Morni hills, pause and listen. The ancient stones whisper tales of valour, refuge, and transformation—a saga etched into the very fabric of Haryana’s pride. 🏰🌿
