Five Chinese citizens and their driver lost their lives in a devastating explosion when a suicide bomber targeted their convoy in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as reported by Reuters. The assailant struck as the convoy, transporting Chinese engineers from Islamabad to their camp in Dasu, fell victim to the explosion, which also claimed the life of a local individual. Prompt response from local law enforcement initiated relief efforts at the scene.
The tragedy unfolded as the alleged suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle, targeting a convoy affiliated with the construction firm China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC), engaged in the Dasu hydropower project. This marks a distressing recurrence of violence, reminiscent of a similar attack on the same company in 2021.
President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan condemned the assault, reaffirming the unbreakable bond between Pakistan and China. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the five Chinese nationals who perished in the attack. Notably, Dasu has witnessed previous security incidents, including a deadly blast in 2021 that claimed the lives of 13 individuals, including nine Chinese nationals. Following that incident, Pakistan compensated the families of the deceased Chinese workers and collaborated with Chinese authorities in the investigation.
The unfortunate incident in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province adds to a series of attacks targeting Chinese interests in Pakistan. Just last year, in August 2023, armed rebels in Balochistan province engaged in a fierce confrontation with Pakistani security forces after attacking a convoy of Chinese engineers. This grim trend traces back to May 2021, when a suicide bomber, disguised in a burqa, targeted a minibus transporting staff from the China-built Confucius Institute at Karachi University, resulting in casualties, including Chinese nationals. Similarly, in April 2021, a suicide bombing at a luxury hotel in Quetta claimed lives and caused significant injuries during an event attended by the Chinese ambassador.
These incidents underscore the vulnerability of Chinese nationals involved in various projects in Pakistan, particularly under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative. The ambitious Belt and Road Initiative has seen substantial Chinese investment in Pakistani infrastructure projects, solidifying the “all-weather” friendship between the two nations.
Addressing the situation, Pakistan’s Privatisation Minister Abdul Aleem Khan reaffirmed the nation’s resolve to combat such heinous acts, emphasizing the concerted efforts of the Pakistani people and the military to thwart any attempts aimed at undermining the Pak-China friendship and the CPEC initiative. Moreover, the repeated targeting of Chinese interests in Pakistan risks eroding the confidence of China, a steadfast ally that has consistently supported Pakistan in various endeavors. Such attacks not only threaten lives but also endanger the vital partnership between the two nations, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures and bilateral cooperation to safeguard mutual interests and strengthen regional stability.
The recent attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province serves as a grim reminder of the challenges faced by Chinese nationals working on projects in Pakistan. Despite significant investments and collaborative efforts between Pakistan and China, the security situation in certain regions of Pakistan remains precarious, posing a threat to the safety and well-being of Chinese workers and citizens.
The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic development in Pakistan. However, the targeted attacks on Chinese interests raise concerns about the security infrastructure along the corridor and the effectiveness of measures taken to protect foreign personnel and investments.
The government of Pakistan, in collaboration with Chinese authorities, must take immediate steps to bolster security measures and address the root causes of extremism and violence in the affected regions. Additionally, diplomatic efforts are essential to reassure China of Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals and maintaining the integrity of bilateral relations.
Furthermore, the international community must condemn such acts of terrorism and provide support to Pakistan in its efforts to combat extremism and promote peace and stability in the region. Collaboration between Pakistan, China, and other stakeholders is crucial to addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by terrorism and ensuring a conducive environment for economic development and cooperation.
In the face of adversity, Pakistan and China must stand united and resilient, reaffirming their commitment to mutual friendship and cooperation. Together, they can overcome the challenges posed by terrorism and build a brighter future for the people of both nations.
