The Trinamool Congress made a significant announcement on Sunday, revealing the candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha seats ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This move appeared to disregard the INDIA bloc, as the Congress reiterated ongoing discussions regarding seat-sharing with its partners.
Abhishek Banerjee disclosed the names during the Brigade Ground march, also announcing his candidacy for the Diamond Harbour constituency. Notably, former cricketer Yusuf Pathan emerged as Trinamool’s pick for Baharampur, potentially challenging Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Additionally, a key revelation from Trinamool’s list was the exclusion of sitting MP and actor Nusrat Jahan from the 2024 lineup, particularly noteworthy as her constituency is Basirhat, the area of Sandeshkhali.
Trinamool’s nomination of former cricketer Yusuf Pathan as the candidate from Baharampur has set the stage for a potential contest against Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who has been representing the Congress stronghold since 1999. This nomination marked a sticking point in the Congress-TMC seat-sharing discussions, with Mamata Banerjee unwilling to cede the seat to the Congress.
Mahua Moitra has been granted a ticket to contest from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency, the same seat she represented in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections before being expelled due to a bribe-for-question scam. Notably, Nusrat Jahan, the incumbent MP, has been removed from the Basirhat constituency, which includes Sandeshkhali, possibly as a repercussion of the Sandeshkhali controversy. Haji Nurul Islam will now be contesting from Basirhat.
In another development, actor Saayoni Ghosh will be replacing Mimi Chakraborty as the candidate from the Jadavpur constituency, following Chakraborty’s decision to step away from politics.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the Indian National Congress has consistently expressed its wish for a fair seat-sharing agreement with the TMC in West Bengal. He stressed that such an agreement should be reached through negotiations rather than unilateral declarations. The Congress has also advocated for the Indian group to unite in the fight against the BJP. Meanwhile, addressing the crowd at the Brigade Parade Grounds, Ms. Banerjee outlined the agenda for the forthcoming Lok Sabha election by highlighting the state’s funding challenges.
The Trinamool Congress chairperson addressed the recent resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel. She highlighted concerns over attempts to exert forceful control over Bengal, as depicted in news reports. Ms. Banerjee praised Goel for not succumbing to such pressure and commended his stance. She criticized those tarnishing the reputation of the Election Commission of India by allegedly working under the influence of the BJP government.
Addressing the rally, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee intensified criticism against the BJP, labeling them as “outsiders” and “opponents of Bengal.” He questioned the halting of funds specifically to Bengal amidst the existence of 28 states and eight Union Territories. Mr. Banerjee challenged the BJP’s stance towards Bengal, prompting the gathering to ponder.
