It has been eight years since the release of the initial Deadpool film, and Ryan Reynolds returns for a concluding performance as the iconic red-and-black-clad antihero. Is this the opportunity for the MCU to rebound after its most challenging year to date?”
It’s well known that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is having a tough time keeping its fans interested. Before the pandemic, Marvel Comics was gaining more and more followers. Around 100 million people worldwide went to see Avengers: Endgame when it came out in 2019. However, the Covid-19 pandemic hit Marvel Studios hard in 2020. They had to stop making movies, and people were avoiding going to theaters because of the virus. Most theaters were closed anyway. Movie studios struggled to get back the interest of their fans, especially with the rise of streaming services.
In 2021, Marvel tried to get back its pre-pandemic success by making four movies instead of their usual three. Having more superhero movies to watch seemed like a good idea, but there was a problem. They focused too much on making lots of movies quickly, and the quality of the writing suffered. Fans started to feel like there was too much mediocre content.
As a result, in the past three years, Marvel made $4.65 billion from their ten movies. That’s less than half of what they made from 2017 to 2019. Also, the average ratings of their movies on Rotten Tomatoes went down from 90% in 2017 to 63.33% in 2023. This led to Marvel hitting a low point with Madame Web, their latest release, which only made $25.8 million in its opening weekend. That’s the lowest for any movie in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU). It’s hard to believe this is the same company that made the second highest-grossing film in history.
Now, there are two big questions: What did Marvel do right in the past that they’re not doing now? And how can they get back the excitement and enthusiasm they once had in the MCU’s heyday?
Listen up: one big reason why No Way Home, Marvel Studios’ most successful movie in the last three years, brought back so many old fans was because it used nostalgia and emotions. Bringing back Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield was a great move by Marvel. It made their old fans happy and tied up loose ends in their stories. Seeing their favorite childhood heroes on the big screen again made many long-time Spider-Man fans feel warm and emotional.
The next Deadpool movie could do the same thing for the MCU. Many people think it has the potential to save the MCU. But to do that, it would need to bring back some important characters. Most importantly, it would have to somehow introduce the popular former “X-Men” characters from 20th Century Fox (like Wolverine, Beast, Professor X, Storm, and others) into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In October 2023, when there was a writers’ strike, all other planned projects were stopped, and Deadpool 3 became Marvel’s main focus. When the strike ended on November 9th, they quickly started writing, acting, and making the movie. Marvel decided to put all their effort into this one movie, and it will be the only big movie that the studio releases this year.
So, a lot is riding on the success of July 26th’s Deadpool & Wolverine movie.
In the new official trailer, Deadpool calls himself the “Messiah – Marvel Jesus,” and it seems like he’s talking to both the audience and the people in the movie. He’s seen as the savior that the MCU needs to win back its fans. But why? Well, if you watched the trailer, you know that he plans to fix the mess that Disney made and stay true to the original comics.
He’s known for being R-rated, and although Disney was hesitant about that, they decided to stick to Deadpool’s style, as seen in the trailer’s jokes and language. This move appeals to the adult fans who grew up with Marvel Comics movies and helps Marvel create the kind of self-aware and true-to-the-comics film it needs.
Marvel needs a character who can criticize and poke fun at the studio’s mistakes to redeem itself in the entertainment industry. And who better for that job than Deadpool? He’s known for breaking the fourth wall, being rebellious, and not caring about rules.
And guess who joins Deadpool as he cleans up the mess in the timeline? Hugh Jackman, the iconic Wolverine, sporting the original yellow and blue suit from the comics. This partnership aims to bring back the nostalgic fans who have been asking for their favorite characters to return.
Nostalgia is incredibly influential, and Marvel is well aware of its potency.
