Indian onions are being stirred into the simmering cauldron of boycott brewing in Bangladesh.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina clinched a fourth consecutive term in power, as her Awami League party secured three-quarters of the parliamentary seats. However, the election drew controversy, with many observers noting the detention of key leaders from the main opposition party and over 25,000 activists. These arrests, made in the lead-up to the election on charges like arson and vandalism, have raised concerns among independent observers who suspect political motives behind them.

While certain social media platforms attempt to propagate the “boycott India” narrative, the Modi government has taken a different stance. On Monday, it authorized the export of 50,000 tonnes of onions, a crucial kitchen staple, to Bangladesh ahead of Ramzan and Eid.

Onions hold significant importance as a culinary component, particularly during the feasting and fasting period of Ramzan leading up to Eid celebrations.

Despite the general ban on onion exports, the government has made exceptions for two friendly nations: Bangladesh and the UAE.

India imposed an onion export ban in December 2023, causing a notable surge in onion prices not only in Bangladesh but also in several other countries.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the main opposition, and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the primary Islamist party, refrained from endorsing the boycott call.

While the economic impact of a product boycott may be limited, given that exports to Bangladesh accounted for only 2.6% of India’s total exports in 2022-2023, it is the underlying sentiment that Delhi should heed, considering the historical relationship between the two nations.

India played a pivotal role not only in the liberation of Bangladesh but also provided refuge to Sheikh Hasina and her sister following the assassination of her father, Bangladesh President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

China has been actively pursuing closer ties with Bangladesh, a nation strategically positioned, highlighting its significance.

However, individuals have remarked that the ‘Boycott India’ campaign lacks significant resonance among the general populace.
