The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, recently announced the highly anticipated dates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Spanning seven phases, the electoral journey is set to begin on April 19 and conclude on June 1, with the results being declared on June 4.
Alongside the Lok Sabha elections, Kumar also outlined the assembly polls schedule, with Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh going to the polls on May 13, and Odisha on April 19.
During a press briefing, the Election Commission addressed various concerns to ensure a level playing field for all candidates. These concerns included muscle power, monetary influence, misinformation dissemination, and violations of the model code of conduct. The commission’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process was evident in these deliberations.
Special provisions have been made for citizens aged above 85 years to cast their ballots from the comfort of their homes, ensuring their participation in the democratic process. Additionally, the Election Commission has reassured voters of the availability of essential amenities such as drinking water and sanitation facilities at all polling stations, further enhancing the voting experience.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections hold paramount significance as the tenure of the current Lok Sabha draws to a close on June 16. The urgency to form a new house before the deadline looms large. Simultaneously, the impending conclusion of the terms of four state assemblies in June adds a layer of complexity to the electoral landscape.
In the previous general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 303 seats, setting its sights on a historic third consecutive term, while the Indian National Congress secured 52 seats. The upcoming elections assume even greater importance with opposition parties eyeing an opportunity to challenge the BJP’s dominance.
The Lok Sabha elections will be conducted in seven phases, each covering a different set of states and union territories.
The results will be declared on June 4.
As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw near, the entire nation is abuzz with anticipation, eagerly awaiting the outcome that will chart the course of our country’s future. The electoral process, characterized by its multi-phase schedule, serves as a testament to the vibrant democracy of India, ensuring extensive participation and representation across the diverse landscape of our nation.
